Thomas Gainsborough was born in Suffolk, with recognizable talent even as a child. At 13, his family sent him to study in London under French artist Hubert Gravelot. In 1745, Gainsborough attempted to make a living selling his landscapes, but his business ventures soon failed and he returned to his birthplace. He then moved to Bath, abandoning his preferred landscape subjects for the more lucrative career of a portrait artist. In 1768, Gainsborough’s reputation earned him a spot as one of the founders of the Royal Academy in London.

Franz Xavier Winterhalter was born in the small village of Mensenschwad in Germany. He studied painting at the academy of Monaco. In 1835, after he painted portrait of Grand Duke Leopold of Baden, Winterhalter was appointed his court painter.

Frederic Bazille studied Gleyre’s studio in 1862 and made the acquaintance of Monet, Renoir, and Sisley. He helped in the development of the Impressionist movement. Bazille painted mostly figures, but depicted them in outdoor settings. Bazille died while serving in the Franco-Prussian War.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec [French Post-Impressionist Painter and Printmaker, 1864-1901], descendant of the counts of Toulouse, was born on November 24, 1864 in the French town of Albi. As a child, Henri was weak and often sick. In 1887 he established himself as an artist in Paris.

For his subjects he took the night-life of Montmartre: circus, theatre, cabaret as well as brothels and bars. With a sparing use of materials, he managed to capture with great accuracy the artists and other people who frequented these establishments. Lautrec achieved greatest fame with his lithographs, particularly his posters for song, dance and cabaret performances. Inspired by Japanese prints, he used strong contours and sharply contrasting colours in these posters. At the age of thirty-six, he died from a serious disease brought on by heavy drinking.

Georges Seurat, 1859-91, French neoimpressionist painter. He devised the pointillist technique of painting in tiny dots of pure color. His method, called divisionism, was a systematic refinement of the broken color of the impressionists. Seurat’s famous paintings are his Baignade (Tate Gall., London), shown in the Salon des Independants in 1884, and Un Dimanche a la Grande Jatte (Art Inst., Chicago), completed two years later. He died of pneumonia at 31. Seurat is considered as one of the most intellectual artists of his time and was a great influence in restoring harmonious and deliberate design and a thorough understanding of color combination to painting at a time when sketching from nature had become the mode.
